Wegovy contains the drug Semaglutide, which belongs to a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. It works by suppressing your appetite, keeping you feeling fuller for longer, to help you achieve and maintain a reduced calorie intake.
Wegovy is licensed for use in people with a BMI of 30 or more; or for people with a BMI of 27 or more, in the presence of one or more weight-related co-morbidities and is an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity to acheive and maintain weight loss. The drug may be prescribed outside of its licensed indication at the discretion of a Doctor, if they feel it is appropriate.
One of the benefits of Wegovy is the once weekly dosing schedule.
The dose starts at 0.25mg per week and can be escalated to a maximum dose of 2.4mg per week over a 16 week period if required and tolerated.
Each Wegovy and each Mounjaro pen contain 4 doses, with one dose taken each week.
So each pen provides for one month of treatment.
